Should Your Business be Blogging?

With all the benefits of why business should be I was flabbergasted when I came across a post over at the Lorelle on blog. Doug Carr says:
requires transparency. I believe the basic question of whether or not your corporation should blog (I call that ‘clogging’), is whether or not you wish to be transparent in your relationships with your clients and also to your competition. What I know to be true is that, if you do not blog transparently, you will be ignored and destroyed by the blogosphere. Insincerity is easy to observe. It’s most obvious during periods of poor performance with your company. The blog will amplify any behavior by your company. If you try to cover it up with some nice PR, be ready for the backlash. If you’re honest, be ready for the customer appreciation.”
In short, if you can not blog transparently, you’re better off not doing it at all!
Source.
That’s kinda like saying it’s not worth leaving your house today because of the risk crossing the street. (I think the shrinks have a name for that).
There is of course risk in everything.
There is even risk in just starting up a business. Crikey, I’d better not try to be an entrepreneur because I might fail and that could really be disastrous to my self esteem. Give me a break.
After Enron and their ilk, today consumers are demanding “transparency” from companies, and hiding your head in the sand is counterproductive and going against the trend.
Consumers are fed up with sermons from the mount and want to have their say.
is all about interactivity and old static websites are going the way of the dinosaur. Business must either join the revolution or die.
He goes on to say:
There are two issues. Firstly, small businesses tend to have few marketing skills, little time but oodles of passion. So, if a small business does limited marketing, does investing time and effort in an emerging technology give them the best return? Unlikely.
…My advice is, don’t ignore the opportunity but don’t get sucked in. If blogs can’t support an existing communications strategy, don’t complicate things with an unproven tactic.
Really? And what investure in “time and effort” in “emerging technology” might that be? Is the investure any more difficult than with static websites?
The fact is blogs can be easier to set up and maintain than old school websites.
That is the beauty of blogs. They are completely template driven. It is a set and forget technology.
Once your site has been coded (or just choose an off-the-shelf template from the thousands that are available) your printing press is ready to go. Unlike standard websites that require constant geek support for even the smallest of changes.
I don’t believe the author really understands the technology. Case in point: A company has a new product they want to introduce to their website. They call up their webmaster and ask him or her to add some new text or graphics to the website.
Hence, they have to muck around with the
(HTML, XHTML, CSS, you name it) to add even the smallest amount of information. (Can you hear $$$ costs adding up)?
Alternatively, the boss tells his secretary to type a short blurb (i.e post) for the company blog. With the ease of using a word processor he or she can write it, hit the publish button and boom… it’s on the internet! Now what can be easier (and less costly) than that?
Please. Let’s keep our perspective about this.
Every business (big or small) has to do marketing. It is a necessary evil and what can be cheaper than a free or relatively inexpensive hosted blog. An entire year’s worth of
can cost less than the printing of just a few brochures or business cards.
Lorelle goes on to say:
Carr’s opinion is that small businesses face two issues. The lack of marketing skills but tons of passion, and the fact that “
? online social and is still new technology. These are very important points to consider when making the decision on whether or not your small business blogs. If you have the people who can blog, sharing their passion and talent for writing about your business and industry, then have a blog. If you don’t have the staff, expertise, or the money to hire them, then don’t blog. Get yourself a website with information on what you do, how you do it, why you do it, and why we should care, because that is part of today’s core marketing and advertising plan, but skip the blog.
Huh! Am I the only one that sees a contradiction here? In this day and age most everyone in an office can write and use a word processor. And if they can’t you might want to consider replacing them.
Don’t let just anyone within your organization have access to your company blog.
You don’t allow anyone to fiddle with your company website do you? You wouldn’t allow just anybody be your Public Relations spokesman would you?
Of course not. You would hire a pro like Steve Rubel to do it for you. So why should your company blog be any different?
Why not replace your webmaster and hire a professional
/consultant? (So call me ;-).
Accordingly, don’t allow just any employee have access to the company blog (that’s why it’s password protected). Hire somebody who is specifically trained for the job, and make certain they are fully apprised of the company blog policy (more about this later).
The bottom line is every business has (or should have) someone responsible for their marketing and PR. So if you don’t want to hire a professional
then utilize the talent that is already within your organization.
They can also take a lot of time. Blogs are consumers, taking energy away you may need to give to your growing business. They require food in the way of frequent posts and information. They also require some expertise on web standards and technology, though a simple blog can be produced without it, it sure helps to have it.
If you say so (notice the tongue in my cheek). Any marketing method takes effort and blogs are no exception.
Benefits of Blogs over Static Websites:
1. Blogs build regular readership traffic by
together and forming their own web networks.
2. Free publicity and promotion for your blog from other bloggers that link to you.
3. RSS technology — instant publishing to the internet.
4. Blogs humanise the face of business. Consumers appreciate having a name behind the information they read and the ability to interact with your company.
5. Blogs get better
pageranking with the search engines. Because blogs can be posted to so easily they have a tendency to be updated more often and are therefore given a higher over old school websites.
6. Blogs allow customers to provide input. Would you like to have a focus group/test audience for a new product idea but can’t afford to outsource it? Then just ask your readers.
You can communicate with your customers directly and faster.
And it’s not just a one-way conversation either. Think of it as your online billboard, customer relations and communications technology all wrapped into one package that you have complete control over.
There is only one drawback to
that I can see. There is always the possibility that some disgruntled employee could say something dumb or reveal a company secret.
Of course that could also happen just as easily via a quick telephone call to the local newspaper or by any other communications device, so it is not just specific to
technology.
There are always ways to mitigate your damages, and that goes for
as well.
It’s called damage control and being prepared with a plan of action.
Create a company policy manual stating unequivocally the do’s and don’ts of what can and cannot be said on the blog, and make your employees sign an agreement to abide by it. Don’t be a cowboy and let anything goes, especially in today’s environment where bloggers are being
sued for online defamation.
So don’t poo-poo on a technology just because it is new or makes it easier to publish. Setting up a
policy for employees is the responsible thing to do to mitigate damages.
Alternatively, just as a company can easily make a mistake, blogs make it even easier (and faster) to correct that mistake. It’s called the edit button, and/or posting a quick response from the organization.
One more thing.
Newer blogs like
Beta now offer a way of making your blog private. Think of it as a cheap company intranet on the internet. Now that is cool.
Need I say anymore? There is no reason for a business not to blog and everything to gain. So what are you waiting for? Get

How to Make a Big Splash with your Blog and Impress the Hell out of Everyone: All Hail to the Power of Zen …
Warning: This post belongs to the Bloke’s ‘Just for Fun Series’, so if you have no sense of then please refrain from reading any further.
Rory has written an
interesting post about recent newcomer Leo Babauta who has quickly made a name for himself in the overcrowded blog about , leaving bloggers shaking their heads how he did it.
So I thought it would be fun if I wrote a tongue-in-cheek counterpoint to help dispel any speculation and give you my insight as to how he might have done it.
These are my observations in a nutshell:
Make a HUGE splashy banner. Be bold. Be very BOLD. Later, when your blog is more established you can replace the big banner with even splashier advertisements.
Write in very (very) LARGE print. Did I say LARGE? The advantage with this strategy is that you can fill up the page with less words. This takes the “less is more” writing strategy to the nth level. In addition, the sight impaired need not use their scroll button to make the print larger to read. It’s already been done for them.
Speaking of writing, be sure to throw in an impressive buzz word now and then to keep them guessing and running over to
Wikipedia. Who knows, while they’re over there they might even write an article and make you immortal.
Stuff your
with outrageous superlatives that are sure to attract swarms of readers like flies on doo doo. Words like “Superblog” or “Pure Gold“… be sure to keep your thesaurus handy and remember that BOLD thing.
Use a simple template/theme design. Some call this the “uncluttered” look. The advantage with this strategy is that it takes zero talent or knowledge to create your template and only a few minutes of your time. Who cares if it looks like it was made using Microsoft Word.
This strategy will only be effective if you tell everyone else they should do the same to hide the fact that you have no coding skills whatsoever. Later on when your blog gets more popular you will have lots of white space to clutter up your design with nice, blinking advertisements.
Only allow the cheering section to leave comments. Forget about
transparency and delete with extreme prejudice any comments that might offer a different opinion … especially if it comes from the competition. (I know this from bitter personal experience).
Glean the best information that you can find from the internet. Repackage it with all the flair you can muster, applying CMP (Copy, Massage and Paste) using your best copywriting skills. Then pass it off as your own content.
Prepare a bunch of posts in advance and orchestrate your big splash by scheduling them for release one right after the other. That outta
impress them.
Now sit back, have a beer and watch your traffic go through the roof. Laugh your way all the way to the bank.
Disclaimer: Any similarity to persons or bloggers living or dead is purely coincidental. Yeah, right.
P.s.: This post was made in fun. Please note the tags “
“ and ““. Get it? So don’t bother sending me hate mail. You will have to stand in line for that.

Do What You Love, and the Money Will Follow

In recent years, this philosophy has become
increasingly popular following the success
of the book
Do What You Love, The Money Will Follow
by Marsha Sinetar.
While the approach sounds great,
as career coach Dr. Marty Nemko puts it,
"Millions of people have followed their passion
and still haven't earned enough money to even pay back their student loans, let alone make even a bare middle-class living doing
what they love."
It's not the book's fault. In fact,
it's a very fine book that will take you through a number of exercises to help you discover your true life purpose
and find a number of different ways in which you can fulfill that purpose in your work.
It will teach you to distinguish the true inner voice from the flash-in-the-pan ideas that constantly run through your head.
And maybe it will help you be one of the
few to beat the odds and pursue your dream career.
The problem is that most people don't read the book
and go through the intensive self-discovery exercises it prescribes.
And when it gets boiled down to a mere slogan,
it's more likely to become,
"Do what you love until you go broke and can't do it any more."
Some of the common scenarios include:
No one wants to buy it. You're passionate about it,
but apparently no one else is.
You can't sell people something they don't want to buy.
Someone else already thought of it.
You have a great idea, but it's a niche market,
and someone's already beat you to it.
And if they're better funded, they may be
doing it better/faster/cheaper.
(It happened to my first company - a mistake I won't repeat!)
A lot of people already thought of it.
Highly competitive markets are no fun.
I don't care how much you love the business you're in,
if you're constantly having to go head-to-head with competitors,
it will get old very quickly.
There's more to it than you realized.
You underestimated the costs,
or the development time,
or the incubation period for the marketing to take effect,
or the amount of energy required,
or the toll it would take on your personal life.
So while pursuing your passion is an admirable goal,
doing so to the exclusion of all reason
and responsibility isn't.
If you have family depending on you for income,
you have to consider that, as well.

Synopsis (Credits: TTV)
In this city, there is a “stick here stick there” love story…
The story starts from a girl whose type is common throughout Asia.
This type of girl is called “sticky note girl”. She is plain, simple, law-abiding, wishes are simple, has never been a Somebody and has never aspired to be a Somebody. Their functions are small but indispensable; like a sticky note which can be torn away easily, inconspicuous and ordinary, but she will be around you! A “luxury cruise” journey let this ordinary girl encounter the most extraordinary events in history.
Since young Chen Xin Yi was afraid that people would not like her, so she tried very hard to be nice to people. As long as someone responded to her a little, she would fall in love with that person easily. Everyone called her a sticky note girl. Because whenever anyone needed her, they just need to tear her down and use her. If they don’t need her, they can just throw her away and it wouldn’t matter. But she was a fool who treasured relationships and her weak-willed character often caused her to soften during the times when she needed to make a firm decision. One day, in order to win back her philandering boyfriend Gucci, she splurged on a love cruise but accidentally entered the wrong room. When she woke up, she was stunned to find that she had a one night stand with a stranger, and subsequently discovered that her boyfriend Gucci had betrayed her and hooked up with a rich widow. Her boyfriend then dumped and left her, causing her to suffer a severe blow.
One month later, when Xin Yi saw her pregnancy test results, she regretted not jumping off the ship. A twenty-five years old staff at a law firm, because of a lousy man, had to bear a debt of two hundred thousand dollars and was carrying the child of an unknown man. This had to be the most ironic joke on earth. She took one month’s leave from her company and prepared to return to her hometown “Jiang Mu Island” to consider what she should do.
The stranger in the bed that day was called Ji Chun Xi. He was every girl’s prince charming, rich and handsome, young and capable. When he met the ordinary office girl Chen Xin Yi, he didn’t know whether this was the start of his troubles or the beginning of his happiness.
Because of the Ji family’s heredity illness, there are few males in each generation. Up to now, there was only one male heir for the past nine generations. This causes the matriarch of the family, Zhen Zhu Granny, to lose sleep with worry as she feared that this tiny family flame would be extinguished! Granny hoped that her grandson would be like the scions of other rich family and had many women. Unfortunately this grandson is decent and self-respecting. One day, granny accidentally discovered that Xin Yi is carrying Chun Xi’s baby. Maybe the Ji family’s ancestors had blessed her and finally gave her a “little golden great grandchild”. Therefore granny insisted that Chun Xi marries Xin Yi so that on the day she dies, she can face the Ji family ancestors. Granny forced Chun Xi to marry Xin Yi by threatening to call and tell his girlfriend of three years, so Chun Xi has no choice but to marry Xin Yi in order to fulfill her wish in life. But Chun Xi discovered that he could not face the fact of his marriage and couldn’t decide whether to run away at the last minute or pluck up the courage to take responsibility. At this time, he discovered that they must date and romance under his granny’s request.
Actually Chun Xi has a girlfriend of three years Anna. He had proposed to her many times before but was gently turned down each time. But Chun Xi continued to quietly wait for Anna to promise to marry him and leave everything behind. Anna did not want to marry because of her career and now he accidentally caused Xin Yi to become pregnant. But fortunately Anna was away on an overseas performance tour, giving him time to settle this mixed-up affair. Chun Xi, without his granny’s knowledge, secretly signed a pre-marriage contract with Xin Yi which states that they would divorce after the baby is born. Chun Xi promised to give Xin Yi a sum of money and after that they would have nothing to do with each other. Xin Yi agreed after careful consideration for the sake of her baby. Chun Xi’s plan was that, after the baby is born and Anna returns back after her tour completed, he and Xin Yi’s contract would be due and he can resume his relationship with Anna.
The unknowing Xin Yi moved into Chun Xi’s house and began to learn to get along with Chun Xi. The two strangers, from being unable to adapt initially, learned to get used to each other. This is a very subtle change, of the two people who lived under the same roof but has nothing to do with each other, slowly started interacting due to the trivia matters that happened in their lives. Xin Yi moved into Chun Xi’s bedroom under granny’s request and Chun Xi then went to the guest room to sleep under a pretext. But he slowly discovered that he doesn’t like the loneliness of sleeping alone and would often go back to his original room in the middle of the night. After some time, sleeping with someone by his side became a habit. The Chun Xi who doesn’t like to return home for dinner started to return home regularly and the Chun Xi who vowed not to help in anything also started to shop for baby’s wallpapers and children toys.
When they thought that they are happy, the ticking time bomb Anna who had been kept in the dark returned. Chun Xi never thought that his unresolved relationship with Anna would hurt Xin Yi, who disappeared after leaving behind a divorce agreement. He had thought that this would be the best ending, but Xin Yi had unknowingly captured his heart. He vowed that if he can find Xin Yi again, he would start over and pursue her; and this time it would not be the way a father treats the mother of his child, but as a man treats a woman.

What TypE oF sHoPpeR R u?

well,the way u shop & wat u buy could b an indicator
of whether u r a happi person.
It turns out tat e happiest shoppers arent
those who bag e biggest bargains or e big
spenders who shell out for e best items or
even penny-pinchers who have a hard time
opening their wallets.

there's a report on weDMD said
there r ppl who arent hung up on
money or things.They'd rather
spend on experiences, like dining out
or travelling.Dr mIRiam tatzel
of empire state college in new york call them

"EXPERIENCERS"

She asked 329 college students to complete
survey about their shopping habits and
happiness.The results showed four shopping
personalities.

Big spenders : Buy everything full price and buy only the best
Value seekers : Seek bargains on nice things.

Non-spenders : Dont spend much & dont want to.

Experiencer : Spend freely on experiences such as
good food or travel but are not materialistic

Conclusion : Experiencers r the happiest while big spenders
r the least happy and have the most credit card debt.
